Photo: Rapist almost lynched in LAUTECH

In recent times, the crime rate at Ogbomoso, Oyo State has become inordinately high. And this is more so the case in areas where the student populace of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Akure (LAUTECH) reside.
With reports of theft, burglary, assault and rape, among other vices on the rise, the students of the institution residing at Adenike area again rose to an uproar on September 6, as one of the notorious armed robbers-cum-rapist was finally caught in the act. Continue...

Minimal violence ensued as the intended victims called the Students’ Union leadership and handed the criminal over to them. The Speaker of the Students Representative Council, Olalekan Salami, alongside other members of the House, took the criminal in the Unions’ bus, but unfortunately, on their way to the Police Station, the bus was involved in a mysterious accident, leaving a severe injury on Olalekan and 14 other persons in the bus with the exception of the criminal, Segun (last name withheld).
This accident further enraged the already pensive students as they promptly descended on the thief, stripped him naked and beat him severely. The police, prior to this time had already been summoned, so the students’ protest was halted at Orita Naira, where the Police Force demanded that the criminal be released to them.
The Students’ Union President, Areo Ajibola and the student leader, Bolarinwa Sheriffdeen, reacting on behalf of the entire students, refused to release him. The school authorities’ representatives present at the scene; Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Timothy Adebayo, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Tunde Olabiyisi and Deputy Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Ishola, aided in calming down the students.
After much deliberations among the police force, the school authorities, the student leaders and the aggrieved town people, Segun was released on the agreement that he would be taken to Souns’ palace.
However, a police barricade at Iyana Owode, obstructed and redirected the protestants from their initial destination to the Ogbomoso Police Station.
Upon arrival at the police station, only Segun, Professor Adebayo, Dr Olabiyisi, Dr Ishola, Areo, Sheriffdeen, and two National Union of Campus Journalists members were allowed entrance into the police grounds.
After a lengthy meeting, the Area Commander and the District Police Officer assured the student leaders of justice and maximum security for the school and the town as a whole henceforth.

Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.

Is Genevieve Nnaji Fighting Actress Omoni Oboli?

There has been rumours of a "beef" between tops actresses Genevieve and Omoni Oboli. So, in a recent visit to the corporate office of iCampus Newspaper, Omoni took time out to address the issue:

“I can’t place my fingers on when the supposed beef started but one thing I know is that, there is no problem between Genevieve and I. We did not have any issue or problem whatsoever. We are not enemies, neither are we friends. We are colleagues, a senior one at that, we greet each other when we see; it is not like we visit each other at home.”

But, what led to the situation where she and Genny are not friends or enemies? Omoni said:
"I acted a movie, Anchor Baby, the director (Lonzo Nzekwe) of the movie granted an interview and said Omoni Oboli is the best actress in Nigeria. Some bloggers lashed on it and said Omoni Oboli is better than Genevieve and Omotola.
The next thing was that people started writing about a supposed ‘beef ‘with her. I cannot get the reason they didn’t write about beef with Omotola. In my opinion, someone somewhere was just being mischievous. I have absolutely no problem with her, and I believe she has no problem with me."

Drug trafficking: Court jails 36-year-old for life

An Abuja Federal High Court on Friday sentenced a 36-year old man, Callistus Sunday Chukwukelu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of drug trafficking.
The convict told the court that he planned to get married this year.
Chukwukelu was arrested by officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency with 1.470 kilograms of cocaine at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on January 1 when he was returning to the country on an Ethiopian Airline flight from Sao-Polo, Brazil.
He was consequently charged under section 11 (a) of the NDLEA Act, which prescribed a maximum sentence of life imprisonment on conviction.
Chukwukelu did not deny the charge.
He pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him, following which Justice Adeniyi Ademola promptly convicted him.
The convict then pleaded for leniency, stressing that hardship pushed him into drug trafficking.
According to him, he got involved in the illicit business after his boutique in Lagos was razed by fire.
Also, he informed the court of his marriage plans, which he intended to finalise before the end of the year.
Chukwukelu equally pleaded with the court to have mercy on him so that he could continue to take care of his aged mother.
But the convict must have been disappointed when, after all his pleas, the court still proceeded to slam the maximum punishment – life imprisonment – on him.
Justice Ademola explained that Chukwukelu’s plea of leniency was insufficient to dissuade the court from sentencing him to life imprisonment, as prescribed by the law for such offences.
Interestingly, the judge noted that beyond the fact that the law under which Chukwukelu was charged stipulated life imprisonment, evidence from his international passport indicated that he was an old hand in the business of drug trafficking.

Student smashed cars Destroy school properties due to increase in fees @ Bowen university

The Students razed down buildings, smashed cars and caused mayhem all over the university campus.
"This issue has been going on for some time now, in fact, it started during the tenure of the last VC but it wasn't as bad as this, this new VC made it worse. At times they'll supply light for just few hours especially in the morning, it's just so annoying and painful. We pay over N400, 000 as school fees yet we don't enjoy all the basic amenities a private university should have. It's not just fair."

Confab secretariat releases draft rules

Abuja – The Secretariat of the National Conference, on Thursday in Abuja, released the Draft Rules of Proceedings to guide the conduct of the delegates to the conference.
Mr Akpandem James, Assistant Secretary, Media and Communications of the Conference, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the Rules would be adopted by the delegates on Monday.
“The Draft Rules and the 1999 Constitution have been ready since 6 a.m. this morning and we have made them available to the delegates to study.
“However, it is only a draft; it is going to be debated clause by clause by the delegates on Monday. If they (delegates) adopt it, then it becomes the Rules guiding the conference.
“But if there is any clause they feel should be amended or rejected, then they will decide at the  plenary on Monday.
“What we are trying to do as a secretariat is to make the delegates as comfortable as possible to ensure smooth proceedings throughout the conference,” James said.
NAN reports that some of the delegates had already collected copies of the Draft Rules and the 1999 Constitution.
They also said that they had begun studying the “voluminous” Reports of previous conferences that were given to them at their inaugural meeting on Tuesday.
Former Plateau Governor, Chief Fidelis Tapgun, who is a delegate to the conference, told NAN that delegates were already studying copies of the rules of procedures for the plenary and the constitution.
Tapgun said that the procedures would have to be debated and adopted first before the plenary could really commence business on Monday.
“The documents are the Report of the Political Bureau and the past Constitutional Conferences set up by (Olusegun) Obasanjo, (Ibrahim) Babangida and (Sani) Abacha.
“We often see that committees are set up and nothing is done with their reports.
“But we think that this time around, the President is determined that we would look at all the past reports and put them in one paper that will be useful to this country,” Tapgun said.
According to him, the documents are needed by the delegates as references that will guide them in their proceedings.
“We are going to continue making references to them so that we are properly guided and not work at cross purposes.
“There were certain things that were raised in those reports that were not implemented in the past, which we feel if implemented, may help.
“We will also see their relevance and see if they are relevant to our present conference, we will see how we can raise them again,” he said.
Spokesman for the Afenifere Renewal Group, Mr Yinka Odumakin,  said the documents would give delegates an insight into past.
“The documents can be useful in terms of giving insights into what has happened in the past and giving foresight to where we should be,” Odumakin told NAN.
He, however, said that the documents were archival materials.
“The Reports of the Abacha and Obasanjo Political Reform Conferences were the kind of things packed in those big bags.
“It is part of the challenge we are facing as a nation; the world has gone beyond giving bags.
NAN reports that the conference held its inaugural meeting on Tuesday and adjourned till Monday, March 24 to resume in  plenary. (NAN)

Jonathan not first minority to rule Nigeria, but most incompetent, APC tells PDP

on   /   in News 3:48 pm   /   Comments
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has told the PDP that President Goodluck Jonathan is not the first minority to rule Nigeria and will not be the last, hence the frequent resort to his minority ethnicity is nothing but a poorly-veiled attempt to cover up his blatant incompetence, poor leadership and sheer cluelessness.
In a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the PDP’s claim that the Boko Haram insurgency and other internecine crises in the country were being sponsored by the opposition because the President hails from a minority group is totally irresponsible and absolutely not grounded in fact.
It said First Republic Prime Minister Tafawa Balewa (Sayewa) and military heads of state Yakubu Gowon (Angas) and Sani Abacha (Kanuri) were also from minority ethnic groups, a fact that is lost on the trifling PDP.

”The PDP has recently been making outlandish statements and accusations that are capable of destabilizing Nigeria. In its new found proclivity for issuing frivolous press statements, the party has forgotten that facts are sacred and cannot be manipulated. But even by its low standard, the PDP has plumbed the depth of irresponsibility with its latest claim.
”President Jonathan’s woes have nothing to do with his minority ethnicity, but the manifestation of his incompetence, cluelessness and inferiority complex, and the fact that he is backed by a greedy, visionless and crooked cabal, both within his government and his party,” APC said.
The party said if indeed the PDP believes the opposition is sponsoring Boko Haram to stop President Jonathan from realizing his so-called Transformation Agenda, what prevents the PDP-led Federal Government from instituting a probe into all the incidences so far, and to unravel the sources of the sect’s weapons, as demanded recently by Gov. Murtala Nyako?
APC said just like ethno-religious crises in Nigeria predate President Jonathan’s assumption of office, the Boko Haram insurgency started in 2002 during the Obasanjo regime, even though it became aggravated in 2009 when then President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua ordered a joint security operation, following the killing of over a dozen policemen, and the failure of police action to curb the crisis.
The party said it is public knowledge that the operation led to the killing of an estimated 1,000 alleged Boko Haram members, including the extra-judicial murder of sect leader Muhammed Yusuf, and set the stage for the insurgency that Nigeria is witnessing today.
”Even then, the insurgency that could have been quickly curtailed has worsened under President Jonathan because of his ineffectual leadership. Instead of tackling the insurgency decisively as a well-honed leader would have done, the clueless President and his equally feckless party have resorted to blaming the opposition and everyone but themselves for the worsening of the crisis,” it said.
APC said the usual recourse to President Jonathan’s ethnic origin to cover his glaring non-performance does not impress Nigerians, who are aware that as a minority, Jonathan could not have become President without the votes of the country’s majority ethnic groups- Hausa/Fulani, Igbo and Yoruba
”In any case, if the PDP is arguing that President Jonathan is being ‘persecuted’ because he hails from a minority ethnic group, is it the majority ethnic groups that supposedly voted massively for him that are now persecuting him? And what will be their reasons for persecuting the same man they voted into office?
”The truth is that President Jonathan is overwhelmed by the demands of his office, and his party is more interested in looting the public treasury than assisting him to succeed,” the party said. ”The President and his party should admit their failure to meet the yearnings and aspirations of Nigeria and give way to those who are willing and able to perform.”
APC said a country that has no discernible counter-terrorism strategy that will clearly identify the multiple means for preventing, responding and defeating terrorist groups, including the alignment of political, military, social and economic instruments and objectives, cannot expect to successfully battle any insurgency.
”We have continued to offer suggestions to this government on how it can tackle the insurgency that is now ravaging a part of the country. We have called for improved intelligence gathering, the aligning of military and political solutions, the need to de-radicalize the affected areas as well as to invest in research that will give more insight into the different aspects of Boko Haram, including its ideology, leadership structure, profile of members, internal organization, sources of funding and weapons and links to diaspora.
”We have stressed the need to widen the scope of our response to include the sub-regional bloc ECOWAS and the continental body African Union, especially since Boko Haram has assumed a regional dimension. We have called for a Marshall Plan of sorts for the North-east, not the paltry 2 billion Naira which the FG provided as recovery fund to the six North-east states, at least four of which are worse-hit by the insurgency.
”We have called for an end to inter-agency rivalries that have weakened the fight against the terrorists, and we have advocated the need to lift the morale of our gallant men and women in uniform who are battling the insurgency, instead of the huge funds allocated for the purpose of upgrading their equipment ending in the deep pockets of fat cats.
”If and when these and other recommendations are taken seriously by the government, instead of resorting to ethnic and religious excuses, then it will begin to seriously address the insurgency,” the party said.

We won’t vote for Jonathan in 2015 -S’Kaduna

Miffed by what they described as the insensitivity of  the Federal Government to their plight, the people of Southern Kaduna in Kaduna  State said on Thursday they would  not vote for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015.
They premised their position on their allegation that Jonathan “has shown that he cannot do anything to stop the killings” of the people of the area.
Three villages of  Ugwar Sankwai, Ungwar Gata and Chenshyi, all  in Kaura Local Government Area of the  state were penultimate Saturday attacked by yet-to-be identified gunmen and over 100 residents  killed and property worth millions destroyed.
Under the Concerned Realists of Southern Kaduna, they asked the President not to nurse the ambition of contesting the 2015 presidential election as they would not vote  for him.
The Concerned Realists of Southern Kaduna comprises lecturers, technocrats, retired military officers, retired civil servants for the Southern part of the state.
The leader of the group, Dr. John Danfulani, while addressing a news conference in Kaduna over the killing of over 100 villagers in the Southern part of the state, said the president did not care about the people of the area and therefore must not expect their votes in 2015 if he contests the election.
He said, “President Jonathan does not care and therefore does not deserve the votes of the bleeding Southern Kaduna people in 2015. We cannot also be helpless and allow politicians take our existence for granted.
“We will mobilise our people to vote against Ramalan Yero, Namadi Sambo and Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 as a protest of their insensitivity to the killings in Southern Kaduna and their failure to honour our dead who have been slaughtered under their stewardship.

See Why US Bullies Nigeria, But Avoids China and Saudi Arabia

The Igbo have a saying – popularised by the acclaimed novelist, Chinua Achebe – that he who brings home ant-infested faggots should not complain if he is visited by lizards. That proverb is apt in describing the type of treatment Nigeria receives from the Western world, led by the United States of America.

Last year, President Barack Obama made his second “ward round” to Africa. Again, he excluded Nigeria from his “patients’ list.” The official excuse was that Nigeria’s democracy was not commendable. Also, since President Goodluck Jonathan signed the anti-gay bill into law early this year, the Western world, led by the US, has not allowed us to drink water and drop the cup, as the saying goes. Presidential visits have been allegedly cancelled; threats of cancellation of aids have been issued; patronising and condescending comments have been directed at us.

Compare this to the treatment the West metes out to two other countries: China and Saudi Arabia...
China is the largest non-democracy in the world. China doles out the death penalty for many offences, including corruption and drug trafficking. China regularly arrests and detains those who speak against its dictatorial policies. China censors what its citizens can see on the web. China restricts the number of children a Chinese couple can have. China uses the iron fist against the self-determination efforts of Tibet, and since 1959, the spiritual leader of Tibet – the Dalai Lama – has been in exile (double the length of time Nelson Mandela spent in prison).

In its 2013 report, Human Rights Watch noted that in 2012 “Chinese people had no say in the selection of their new leaders, highlighting that despite the country’s three decades of rapid modernisation, the government remains an authoritarian one-party system that places arbitrary curbs on freedom of expression, association, religion, prohibits independent labour unions and human rights organisations, and maintains party control over all judicial institutions. The government also censors the press, internet, and publishing industry, and enforces highly repressive policies in ethnic minority areas in Tibet, Xinjiang, and Inner Mongolia.”

Yet, the US sees no evil, hears no evil, keeps its mouth shut and continues to do business with China. Its president continues to exchange presidential visits with his Chinese counterpart. Even when the US president attempts to raise his voice against a Chinese policy, he speaks in a muffled voice.

Why is that so? China is the US’ largest creditor: The amount reached a record $1.317tn in November 2013. China crawled out of its retrogressive communism and embraced open market and industrialisation, with the result that it was catapulted to the second largest economy in the world. Its status as the most populous nation in the world and a member of the Security Council are also great assets. No sane man talks down on his creditor or benefactor, unless the man has made concrete plans to stop depending on the benefactor. The US, Canada, Asia and the European Union know that anybody who messes with China gets a bloodied nose. China does not condone any criticism, no matter how subtle. So, every country respects itself where China is involved and looks for beggarly countries to bully.

In the same vein, Saudi Arabia does not allow its women to vote. It does not even allow its women to drive. It cuts off the heads or limbs of those found guilty of certain crimes. Saudi Arabia does not allow political or human rights associations. It arbitrarily arrests and detains peaceful dissidents and uses undue force on demonstrations. Homosexuality is punishable by death in Saudi Arabia. But the US develops not just foot-and-mouth disease at such but also eye-and-ear disease. Its business with Saudi Arabia gets oilier by the day. Human Rights Watch said in its 2013 report: “The US did not publicly criticise any Saudi human rights violations except through annual reports…. The US concluded a $60 billion arms sale to Saudi Arabia, its largest anywhere to date.”

Why would the US criticise Saudi Arabia? The oil from Saudi Arabia runs deep, and the US and its allies benefit from it. Also, Saudi Arabia is the headquarters of the Muslim world. Any criticism of it is viewed as a criticism of Islam. Muslims are touchy about any criticism of their practices, especially when such comes from the West/Christians. The US does not want to be seen as anti-Islam. Furthermore, Saudi Arabia is a key ally of the US and the West in the Arab world, where there are deep-seated anti-West sentiments. Therefore, the US and EU prefer to look the other way on the human rights records of Saudi Arabia.

They turn their focus on Nigeria and make it their whipping boy. Why? We still beg for aids when we should be giving others aids. We still beg for foreign investments when we should be seeking new territories to invest in. We still allow external monitors during our elections when we should be helping some countries in Europe, the Americas and Asia to conduct elections. We still kill and burn down property over elections and religion. We still steal the money meant for the development of the nation and hide it in other countries while our people suffer and die because of lack of potable water or health care.

If we had built a nation that is comparable to South Korea; if we had dropped the lazy oil-sharing and oil-dependency mentality and embraced industrialisation; if we had learnt to put the nation first and not resort to primitive ethnic and religious chauvinism and violence at the least misunderstanding; if we had stopped wobbling and fumbling and were showing inspiring leadership in Africa – no doubt, we would not be talked down upon. Any country that intends to talk to us must “chew its words” well before uttering them.

The world has given us enough signs that should propel us to rise from our slumber and stand on our feet like warriors. Most great companies are founded by men and women who were insulted in their place of work or sacked summarily. Many people would not have built their own house if their landlord had not “insulted” them. Such “insults” light a fire in the heart of a man which fires up the man to great achievements.

That is why I like President Jonathan’s policy on local manufacturing of automobiles, local production of rice, sugar, cement, etc. We need more of such. And we need to move faster, even though killjoys and detractors like Boko Haram and co are “pouring sand in our garri.” We need our people to stop going to India or the UK to die or be saved from illnesses. We need our children to stop moving in droves to foreign universities – we need Europeans, Americans and Asians to come and study in our universities.

Like Ralph Waldo Emerson is credited as saying, “if a man can write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse-trap, than his neighbour, though he builds his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door.” Despite the West’s pretensions to democracy and freedom, if ours were to be a vicious dictatorship with a buoyant and enticing economy, the Western World would look the other way and do business with us.

Therefore, let us be in a hurry to build an enviable nation. Nigeria needs not fear the Western World which threatens us with sanctions, rather let us fear Mr. Underdevelopment which makes a country not only to receive insults from other countries but also from its citizens who are weighed down by pov

Asari Speaks Again: We'll Burn Nigeria If Jonathan Lose in 2015

Niger Delta militant leader, Mujaheeden Asari-Dokubo, has insisted once again that his kinsmen in the oil-rich Nigeria Delta would burn down Nigeria if President Goodluck Jonathan failed to secure a second term ticket in 2015 presidential election. He said APC must not pick a Northern candidate if they do not want trouble.
“If it is war the North wants, we are ready for them because Jonathan must complete the mandatory constitutionally allowable two terms of eight years. At home, we have regrouped and we have put our people at alert.
"In less than one hour, the way we would strike, the world will be shocked. If anybody does anything against Jonathan, we will retaliate. What we will do will shock the whole world. We will cripple the economy of the country not only in the creeks, but also on the nation’s territorial waters, no vessel will be allowed to enter Nigeria’s territorial waters."
Speaking in an interview with National Mirror, Asari insisted that the people of the Niger Delta would make the country ungovernable if President Jonathan is not re-elected even in a free and fair election.

The militants’ leader said APC should field a presidential candidate from South-South to challenge Jonathan in the election. Asari-Dokubo said the people of the Niger Delta would not accept the defeat of Jonathan, and that the President must be allowed to rule for eight years (that is 10 years).

Warning the North, Asari said: “Let them not try anything. If they abuse Jonathan, there is no problem, he is their President but anything that will affect the interest of the Ijaw people and the interest of the entire people of the Niger Delta will be resisted at any cost.”
Asari-Dokubo also vowed that the defeat of Jonathan in a free and fair election would trigger crisis. He said: “Jonathan cannot be defeated, they cannot defeat him, they don’t have the right, every part of the country must have equal stake in the presidency of the country. Let them go and sleep in their houses. If they don’t, they are looking for trouble and we are going to give it to them."

How Housewife, Obiageli, Killed Her Husband's Brother in Lagos

The real motive this 35-year old woman, Mrs Obiageli Oriuwa, allegedly killed a medical doctor, Ikechukwu Oriuwa, who's her husband’s younger brother, has been revealed by the family of the victim.

Obiageli, who has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation at the State CID in Lagos, allegedly stabbed the 37-year old medical doctor to death at their family house at 52, Ladega Street, Ajegunle in Apapa, Lagos during an argument between the two of them on Tuesday.
Confessing on what led to the unfortunate incident, Obiageli claimed that she did not deliberately set out to kill her husband's brother, but only wanted him and his wife to pack out of her husband's family house...
A member of the victim’s family, Chinedu Oriuwa, alleged that it was not the first time Obiageli attempted to kill Ikechukwu. He said she had asked the doctor and his family to move out of the family house, claiming that the house belongs to her husband since he is the first son of the family.

Chinedu said though the matter was settled between them, Obiageli still continued to nurse animosity against everybody in the house, including their mother who has now travelled abroad.

Chinedu said that Obiageli’s husband, Edward, who is their elder brother, married her just two months after he had already married a lady known as Veronica. It was against the wish of the family and this always caused quarrel between Obiageli and other members of the family, including the late medical doctor.

On her part, Obiageli explained that she was always having disagreement with the late Ikechukwu because he did not want his elder brother to marry her.

When asked how she felt about his death, Obiageli said she is confused and that if she had known, she would not have married into the family.

According to PM News report, Ikechukwu woke up in the morning, went to a gym for exercise and came back to prepare for work. But on getting home, tenants complained to him that Obiageli switched on her electricity generator in her shop where she sells drinks, locked the shop and went away on Monday night.

They told him there were sparks from the generator around 2am and almost burnt the building before tenants put out the fire.

After the complaint that Tuesday morning, Ikechukwu went to Obiageli to advise her not to switch on her gen set in the shop and leave it as that could burn the house. Obiageli got angry and attempted to fight him that morning but the tenants separated them.

Obiageli later went to her room and brought a kitchen knife which she allegedly used to stab the victim on his left rib cage. She left the knife there and ran away. Ikechukwu was rushed to a clinic but he died on the way.

Obiageli is now begin for forgiveness, saying it is the devil's work.

Nine More PDP Governors To Decamp To APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said about nine state governors and more senators are set to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the leading opposition party ahead of the 2015 election.
“We are aware that Rivers PDP is pained and weeping for losing two Distinguished Senators, but would anybody expect progressive-minded Nigerians to remain in a failed, undemocratic, vision less, unfashionable and derailed party?”
“The emergence of APC to the political scene is the answer to the prayers of Nigerians in order to end the menace and hardship that PDP has foisted on our nation and in our polity.”
This is just as the party congratulated the 11 senators that recently dumped the PDP, describing them as “true progressives who have finally come back home and are warmly welcome to where they truly belong.”

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt and signed by Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, senior media adviser to interim chairman of the APC in Rivers State, said the defected senators have joined the movement towards the building of an egalitarian nation for the future generation.

He assured the eleven senators that the party was focused and resolute in its commitment to the tenets of true democracy in Nigeria.

“In the case of Senators Magnus Abe of Rivers South-East and Wilson Ake of Rivers West, we hail their dumping PDP for APC as a big boost to the Congress and a manifestation of the fact that the party is now well rooted in the state.

“APC is now in full control of Rivers political space and ready to deliver the state wholly to the party in the 2015 general elections. Rivers APC welcomes Senators Abe and Ake. Progressives adore you, Rivers people are proud of you; democrats salute your courage, your constituents are behind you,” the statement said.

We urge the PDP, which is a naked party harbouring undemocratic elements, to bury its head in shame.

PDP In Confusion As Atiku Dumps Party For APC

The battle for the 2015 presidency is going to be an epic one. As you read this, there is anxiety in the PDP as another of its big names, ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his men all over Nigeria, have concluded all underground consultations and are said to be heading to the leading opposition party, the APC.

Already, Atiku’s supporters in five of the nation’s six geopolitical zones have voted in support of his move to the APC. The only exception was North-Central zone where voting on his move was 50 for and 50 against.
“The PDP is worried about the consequences of losing one of its founding fathers to APC. With ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo withdrawing from the activities of the party, it will be a blow to lose Atiku too
“Some emissaries from the Presidency and the PDP have had audience with Atiku in Dubai and Abuja. You can imagine their desperation in trailing him to Dubai."
Credible sources told The Nation that Atiku is convinced by the unanimous decision of his supporters that to join the APC is the best option for.
A reliable source said: “There is also anxiety in the PDP because Atiku would not leave the party without some political heavyweights following him.”

The votes for Atiku to move are: 88% for APC, 10% for PDM and only 2% for PDP.

Update On The National Conference Modalities

After a few weeks of suspense, federal government on Thursday unveiled modalities for the proposed national conference. A total of 492 delegates are billed to participate in the conference that will last three months.

Out of the 492, President Goodluck Jonathan is to nominate 77 across specified strata of the society while state governors are to collectively nominate 109 delegates.

Following the modalities released by the secretary to the government of the federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, the socio-political group of the north, Arewa Consultative Forum(ACF), and its counterpart in the south-west, the Afenifere, both gave their stand on the national conference and it's modalities.

ACF’s spokesman, Anthony Sani, in a terse statement said he had nothing to add or subtract from it.

“I have just read the statement by the federal government on the national conference, and pleased to say that I have nothing to add or subtract. I therefore pray the nominees will be our first 11 endowed with public intelligence and patriotic courage,” Sani said.

On its part, the Yoruba socio-political body, Afenifere, acknowledged the template for the conference as the first of its kind to recognize the ethnic nationalities in the country.

Afenifere’s spokesman Yinka Odumakin, who made the position of the group known, however, cautioned that the representations to the conference could be better handled by stakeholders.

“Again, Afenifere finds it commendable that stakeholders will nominate their delegates, and not the government interfering in the process of nomination by interest groups; this is a welcome development.”

But the APC said the proposed conference is just to keep Nigerians busy so people wont ask questions about the rot in the country as well as question the scandalous 2014 budget.
Interim national publicity secretary of the APC Lai Mohammed said:
“What is there that would make us change our position? Has anything happened that could make us change our position? We stand by our position. It is a deceit, fraud and a diversionary tactic to cover up the failure of the PDP.”

EXPOSED: The Okonjo-Iweala's Scandalous 2014 Budget

One of the key functions the National Assembly are expected to dwell on is the consideration and passage of the 2014 budget proposal as present by Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala for the Executive. Below are the sad details:
Apparently, our State House functions as an integrated town that must have every facility within. After all it has its own church (chapel) and mosque and even a zoo where N8m would be spent to upgrade and maintain it and an additional sum of N14.5m would be spent to purchase two beasts, all for the pleasure of its privileged patrons. And this is after we budgeted N7.5m for wildlife conservation in the State House last year. [Pure MADNESS]!
Still in the State House, there is plan to spend N76.3m to purchase ‘crested cutlery, flatware and glassware’. Now, isn’t that too much to spend on those items, for a State House that has existed for years and been playing host to several dinners? We don’t dispose of dinnerware on a yearly basis, do we?
General maintenance in the State House will cost N1.19b of which N138.9 will go for motor vehicle and transport equipment maintenance, N907m for office and residential building maintenance; N17.4m for office furniture maintenance and N40m to maintain office and IT equipment (that comes to spending more than N3m each month to maintain office and IT equipment in the office of the president).
Recalling that only last year, we budgeted N90.9m for this item, it is bewildering why we plan to spend so much this year. Yet, this is aside N188.3m to be spent on office stationery and computer consumables (for which we budgeted N507.9m last year).
It is hoped this exposé will help our parliamentarians make informed decisions when considering the budget:

One way to look at the budget is to consider what each of the heads and figures allocated means for our country and its development. Here are a few of those queries.

The first observation to make is that the budget proposal allocates 76.3% to recurrent expenditure and just 23.7% to capital expenditure. One interpretation of this is that the budget is meant to just keep the country and its institutions running with nothing spectacular to show for. A budget focused on massive development of infrastructure would assign more to capital rather than to recurrent which covers personnel and overhead costs.

About 42 ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) will spend more on their recurrent than on capital and in some instances the difference is so huge. Here are a few cases:
The Ministry of Interior which is expected to spend N144.7b in recurrent and just N6.29b on capital; Police formation and commands, N285.5b and N6.79b; Education including UBEC, N443.9b and N49.5b and Health, N216.4b and N46.3b.

Zeroing in on the Interior Ministry’s budget shows that the Prisons Service would spend N45.2b on recurrent and a mere N2.3b on capital. With such lopsided allocation, it is doubtful if our prisons infrastructure would be revamped from their current state of dilapidation and dehumanisation this year.
Equally difficult to carry out would be construction of new prisons to decongest the present number, even as the country has just signed a deal with the UK that might see the repatriation of more than 600 Nigerians serving jail terms in the UK to come home to complete their sentences.

But why is the recurrent expenditure so huge?
Perhaps we should look at what typically appears under the recurrent expenditure, particularly under the overhead costs. Here are a few of such expenditure heads which need more explanation to the Nigerian public. What do we mean by ‘Welfare packages’, which will gulp as much as N40.4m in the headquarters of the Ministry of Water Resources? Please note that the said figure is not for the entire ministry and agencies under it, rather for the headquarters. Welfare package typically appears in the budget of every MDA and one wonders who audits this spending. How is the money disbursed, to whom and under what circumstances? Who determines the quantum to be disbursed in every office? Under what rules of engagement or laws did we turn our government offices to welfare package disbursers? This budget head is one that needs to be checked or discouraged as it is susceptible to abuse and corruption.

Other heads of interest demanding explanation include:
Cleaning and fumigation services’ (for which the Headquarters of the Foreign Affairs Ministry would spend N201.7m and the Niger Delta Ministry will spend N25m on) and ‘Anniversaries and celebrations (for which the Ministry of Women Affairs will spend N71.6m)’. There are also budgetary heads for ‘Printing of security documents’; ‘Printing of non-security documents’; ‘Field and camping materials supplies’ (N4.39m in the Ministry of Women Affairs); ‘Uniforms and other clothing’; ‘Refreshments and meals’ (N16.7m in the Ministry of Women Affairs); ‘Honorarium and sitting allowance’ and ‘consultancy services for budget preparation’ (N8.36m in the Ministry of Women Affairs). This last bit suggests that the Ministry of Women Affairs has no internal personnel to prepare its budget for the year and for that reason it would procure consultant(s) to help it do so and it would then part with N8.36m).

There are even more interesting budgetary provisions elsewhere, including the State House. For instance, the State House Headquarters plans to purchase an embalming machine at the cost of N1.65m and a hydraulic post-mortem table at N4m. What morbid humour! Of course we know what embalmment and post-mortem are about, but in the State House Headquarters? No doubt there is a clinic in the State House, but I am not sure that clinic caters for a very large number of clients requiring it to have every kind of specialised units including mortuary. I am sure any such requirement for embalmment and post-mortem would not be routine and frequently required in a clinic in the State House and thus the said equipment cannot be seen as necessities. If and when such needs arise, referral could be made to larger state hospitals like the National Hospital.

A peep into the budget for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs brings its own excitement. For instance, we plan to spend money for the maintenance of plants and generators in several of our foreign missions, including the one in London. It’s with the same incredulity that we notice the plan to spend money in fuelling boats and aircraft in virtually all of our foreign missions. As an example, we plan to spend N2.38m and N1.78m respectively for the above services in our Foreign Mission in Abidjan. As earlier mentioned the foreign ministry’s headquarters would part with N201.7m for fumigation and cleaning services during the year.

There is this entry of N100m for the maintenance of Nigeria’s seat in the UN Security Council. Pray what does that come to? One would think that since we have a permanent representative to the UN, that office would be responsible for attending Security Council meetings, which cost would be borne by the UN anyway. So what would the N100m be used for?

Other interesting budgetary provisions proposed in this ministry include N40m for ‘global power on women’s empowerment, HIV and SRHR’ and N9m to be spent by one of its agencies, the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution for ‘building democracy as an instrument of peace’. And although every MDA budgets for health insurance subscription as well as medicals, there is still this curious budgetary head in the foreign affairs ministry known as ‘cost of medical treatment for Mrs. XYZ (I have withheld the real names) at St. Andrews Burns Service at Broomfield Hospital’ for the sum of N49.76m. [Medical bill of one woman N49.76m?] I am just curious why an individual’s name is listed in a federal budget as a spending. Who is the person? Why is this cost not subsumed in other medical costs or covered by insurance?

Next, the Foreign Affairs ministry plans to spend N834.4m to purchase and freight 40 ‘representational cars’ to 40 of our foreign missions. This translates to N20.86m as average cost for the cars. Wouldn’t this cost be reduced if these cars are bought in the locations they are to be used?

The above are just some of the numerous scandalous items in the budget that one could query because they don’t appear to show prudence in the management of our resources.

As the National Assembly considers the budget, it is hoped that they would be detailed enough to query these and more bogus and phoneey entries in the Appropriation Bill.
